NEWS: Clipse Signs With Columbia

I wonder if Rick Rubin/Hip-Hop had anything to do with this. Clipse spoke to Billboard about recently signing a 5 year 50/50 profit-sharing deal for Re-Up Gang Records with Columbia somewhat similar to Jim Jones was talking about.

Clipse will own the masters for its Re-Up Gang artists, Ab Liva and Sandman, but no word on their own masters. 2008 will see a Re-Up Gang album and a new Clipse disc that for the first time will include outside producers including Timbaland, Danjahandz and Dame Grease. More here.

AZ is back with the Street Radio produced 'Life On The Line' featuring Jimi Kendrix off of his upcoming album The Undeniable. Maybe it's just me but the chord progression is very reminiscent of Erykah Badu's 'Four Leaf Clover', which is actually a cover of Atlantic Starr's 'Touch A Four Leaf Clover'. Not sure if this was interpolated for the AZ song, but it's definitely a possibility. The words are different though. Any crate diggers out there that know more?

NEWS: Freeway Album Details

Freeway second album Free At Last will be released November 20th and was co-executive produced by Jay-Z and 50 Cent. Guests include Jay-Z, Lil' Wayne, Jadakiss, Paul Wall, Busta Rhymes, Rick Ross, Scarface, Too $hort and more, with production by Dame Grease, Cool & Dre, J.R. VIDEO: Where's Cam'Ron : The Video

Cam'ron has released this bizarre new video from his brand new myspace page. It serves to announce a new free double album mixtape called Public Enemy #1 slated for release November 7th, which by the way is a Wednesday. So maybe that was a typo on Cam's part since album tend to come out on Tuesdays.

NEWS: RZA/Russell Crowe Collabo Rejected

RZA and fellow American Gangster actor Russell Crowe apparently worked on a song together that was later nixed because studio executives that it wasn't very good.


RZA has a small part in "American Gangster" as a cop and apparently on set the two bonded and would perform and teach each other musical tips. "On some songs we had a little bit of a groove going on throughout the movie and we tried to suggest some of those songs to Universal but the ideas never stuck," RZA said. "Me and Russell jammed. He's a better guitar player than me. I actually picked up a few tips from him. He's so sincere with his lyrics."

Jim Jones speaks on Hell Rell's recent comments on the whole Dipset falling apart situation.


AHH: Hell Rell’s recent comments about you do seem to suggest a divide in the group…
Jim Jones Hell Rell and 40 Cal, that’s a touchy situation. If you listen to Hell Rell, he made a couple of statements that he retracted in his recent interviews. But I heard him on a few more interviews and he refused to say anything crazy out his mouth. Hell Rell is just an artist. If you want to put it in street terms, he’s just a soldier. If you want to put it in chess, he’s just a pawn, you smell me? So his opinion really don’t make no money, regardless how you say it, so the shit don’t count. He’s like a kid who feels like his parents are going through a divorce, which they’re not. He’s just venting how he feels, but he’s opinionless, really, if you look at it. He had an album coming out, he was trying.

Ouch. I feel a mediocre diss track coming.

A few days ago Miss Info pointed out that the Freeway track above takes shots at Kanye West, but Just Blaze also just noted that this is the track he referenced a while back as one targeting Just himself. Freeway starts the song off with ..but I don't give a fuck I'm back without a Just track, try to reach out and work but he ain't chirped back.".

The second verse starts off as follows: I'm back without a track from Kanye but it's all good...we different people and when egos collide, the pride coincide and it brings on d’ evils...he fact is you too busy I’m too gutter, I was fuckin with him when nuhs was like who is he?...but like the scriptures say, quickly they forget."

Can't we all just get along? Kanye and Just are THE producers that make Free sound the hottest.

NEWS: Noose Found On Tupac Statue

A noose was found tied around the neck of the Tupac statue at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts in Georgia.

The Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation said Wednesday the De Kalb County, Ga., Sheriff's Office is investigating last weekend's vandalism at the Stone Mountain center as a hate crime. Early Saturday morning, vandals defaced the building and left a noose around the neck of the bronze statue of Shakur located in the center's peace garden. Later in the weekend, the statue was plastered with handbills covered in rants including references to Sept. 11, 2001, and Hurricane Katrina, as well as vague threats against various record companies and rappers, the foundation said. A male suspect has been arrested in connection with the incidents. More here.

Not to make light, but a few observations. 1. The Tupac statue looks more like some sort of Mario Van Peebles cowboy than like Pac. 2. I love the fact that this suspect has issues with an act of terrorism, a natural disaster and.....various record companies. Nicely lumped in together.

NEWS: Styles P Recruits Black Thought & Ghostface Killah

Billboard reports that Styles P's upcoming new album Supa Gangsta, Extraordinary Gentleman, not the greatest title, will have guest features from an unexpected Black Thought and Wu-Tang Clan's Ghostface Killah. The latter is coincidentally releasing his own new solo outing Big Dough Rehad on the same day, December 4th.


Other collaborators include Swizz Beatz, Akon, Ray J, Max B. and more. Styles also announced The Lox are working on their next group album, most likely for a 4th quarter release in 2008 after the next Sheek Louch solo album.

I heard this track a few weeks ago and definitely liked it right away. 'Take It Back' was produced by Easy Mo Bee and RZA and I think it uses a sample also used on a Jay-Z track, but I haven't been able to track it down yet. I like this one a lot better than the other two tracks leaked so far.

First 50 Cent releases a movie about his life, and now a book. The Daily News reports.


"Sales of 50 Cent's new album have been bested by those of his rap rival, Kanye West, but it's going to take more than marketing to kill this hip-hop king from Queens. Tuesday, he hits town with his latest venture, an intimate, illustrated autobiography that traces his climb from the street to the top of the charts. Starting with unrepentant tales of his early days in his first business, narcotics, the rapper, born Curtis Jackson, and a writer pal, Noah Callahan-Bever of Complex magazine, paint an unembellished picture of the years he spent pulling himself out of the troubled beginnings that gave him his material. The fact that the words "seriously cute" were uttered in this press release, in addition to the following, made me chuckle: 50 Cent will sign copies of "50 x 50" Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, 4 Astor Place. At first it hurt my ears but somehow it managed to segue into something smoother than expected. Harlem's Donny Goines recently released The Excerpt Page 1, and after a few listen I must say it's one of the most promising independent releases by an up-and-coming artist in a while. I haven't sensed real hunger like this since Joell Ortiz came out, and more recently Cause.

The Excerpt consists of 10 tracks with production by Disco D, Vee Nyce, DJ Static, Juice Kid, Collage and Legin and Marvel Comics' own Nick Fury. Nine out of ten tracks feature genuine, intelligent, and passionately dope lyrics with real meaning over beats that range from soulful gems to street bangers. Excellent story telling and emotive narratives filled with stand out lines and passages. Donny sounds like that guy in the cypher that smiles all the way through because of the love for the music, still rapping until the last guy goes home. The only track I'm not digging is the album closer, 'Fame', but hey, a nine out of ten quality average is a whole of a lot better than most rappers records. The hunger cuts through and is exemplified by Donny's tagline: "If you don't know my name, I'm not working hard enough." Exactly the type of attitude that will help Goines make an impact in the Hip Hop world.
