Harlem's Donny Goines recently released The Excerpt Page 1, and after a few listen I must say it's one of the most promising independent releases by an up-and-coming artist in a while. I haven't sensed real hunger like this since Joell Ortiz came out, and more recently Cause.
The Excerpt consists of 10 tracks with production by Disco D, Vee Nyce, DJ Static, Juice Kid, Collage and Legin and Marvel Comics' own Nick Fury. Nine out of ten tracks feature genuine, intelligent, and passionately dope lyrics with real meaning over beats that range from soulful gems to street bangers. Excellent story telling and emotive narratives filled with stand out lines and passages. Donny sounds like that guy in the cypher that smiles all the way through because of the love for the music, still rapping until the last guy goes home. The only track I'm not digging is the album closer, 'Fame', but hey, a nine out of ten quality average is a whole of a lot better than most rappers records. The hunger cuts through and is exemplified by Donny's tagline: "If you don't know my name, I'm not working hard enough." Exactly the type of attitude that will help Goines make an impact in the Hip Hop world.
