Wow, big weekend for Kanye West produced posse cut. This one weights in at 12 minutes Game style. The vocal production on this is horrendous and I don't even know what's going on with the beat during Wale's verse. Ludacris destroys most, but I'm still feeling Kanye West's verse more because of the heart.

Lil' Wayne's new single 'Lollipop' is promoted with what may be one of the last big budget videos of the genre, which is fitting since the song itself is a somewhat dated yet fully obvious amalgamation of Mims's 'This Is Why I'm Hot', Ludacris's 'What's Your Fantasy', any first single off of a 50 Cent album, and the ever present vocoder.

NEWS: Def Jam And Ludacris' DTP Extend Deal

Unless all the posts all over the internets are saying, Ludacris's Disturbing Tha Peace label is not splitting with Def Jam. Matter of fact a long-term extension was just announced.


Island Def Jam Music Group (IDJ) has signed a new long-term extension with Ludacris for his Disturbing Tha Peace label, it was jointly announced today by Antonio “L.A.” Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group, and the three principals of the Atlanta-based Disturbing Tha Peace label: Ludacris (aka Chris Bridges), Chaka Zulu and Jeff Dixon. “The Atlanta hip-hop scene and the Dirty South movement in general owe more than they can ever repay to Chris,” said Mr. Reid. “Our friendship stretches back more than a decade and I never cease to be amazed at his imagination, creativity, and most of all his outrageous sense of humor. Now changing business conditions necessitate that we review our respective rosters and focus to ensure that future opportunities and challenges are aggressively achieved. Ludacris has built Disturbing Tha Peace into one of the iconic names in hip-hop, one that will remain an important part of the Island Def Jam family.”

NEWS: Island/Def Jam Trying Hard To Fail

Discussion time. "No, sorry. Island Def Jam has disabled embedding on all their videos." This was the comment I received from a third party publicist trying to do their job promoting a video for their client Island/Def Jam. My reply was:
"That means Island Def Jam has disabled all viral and/or blog promotion on all their videos. They understand this?".

I simply can't imagine what is going through these executives' heads? This also happened last week when Jay-Z's 'Pray' video was released, only from the Roc-A-Fella website with a puny banner ad to capitalize on the visitors? Eskay put his finger right on the sore spot and scolded the company with surgical precision for it's ignorant strategies (read here).

I feel bad for the publicists getting cuffed in their efforts to supply press outlets with content. And you know they know. They have to send emails knowing no one will write anything about the content as it cannot be integrated into any publication. Nice going Island/Def Jam. Why even make a video if you're going to fight a large section of your promotional machine and unable them to promote your content? Last time I checked the accounting methods applied music videos still were categorized as 'promotional expenses'.

Lets look at it in black and white. Do you want your artists/music promoted? Then make tools available for press to be able to promote your content. There is no possible good outcome in the scared tactic of keeping the content to yourself as a label. Because, 1. It will be ripped and uploaded to youtube/dailymotion. (See below for the video in question, where the rip already racked up 500k views.) 2. If it wouldn't be ripped, it means no one will find out about the artist. Neither seems like a good business strategy. It blows my mind that this common sense hasn't penetrated the Major Label world. It's not like I'm advocating free downloads or anything, just making promotional tools available to press and artists.

NEWS: Ludacris As An Elfin

It takes a pretty big man to play an midget, especially if you're a rapper. Or an elf I guess, in the upcoming Vince Vaughn movie Fred Clause. Ludacris felt up for the part. I would've loved to see Ja Rule take this part.

PHOTOS: Boost Mobile Rock Corps At Radio City Music Hall

Last night I attended the Boost Mobile Rock Corps benefit show at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. I got a chance to hang out back stage to take some shots. People that performed include Ludacris, Busta Rhymes, Jadakiss, Swizz Beatz, Just Blaze, Biz Markie, Marley Marl, Hurricane Chris, Spliff Star, Yung Joc, Keshia Cole, and a mesmerizingly beautiful Eve who was on the wrong side of the stage for me to take photos of. Dagger! It was a great show with a lot of highlights and a lot of love between performers backstage. A few photos below. Find the full set here. The show itself was a great series of short sets with Busta Rhymes as the high light. Also included were rock bands Angels And Airwaves and Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, both visibly nervous to play in front of a 90% Hip Hop crowd. Angels & Airwaves went over surprisingly well.
