NEWS: Q-Tip To Work With Nigel Godrich

If you’re imagining any of the usual rap rainmakers — Timbaland or the Neptunes, Pete Rock or DJ Premier — you’d be wrong. Try Nigel Godrich, the British engineer-producer whose densely layered, atmospheric sound has become closely identified with Radiohead. In fact, Godrich is sometimes referred to as the morose Brit rock group’s “sixth member” for producing every album it’s put out since 1997’s “OK Computer.” But he’s also racked up an impressive list of characteristically downbeat, brooding albums for the likes of Beck and Charlotte Gainsbourg, Air and Pavement.

Godrich is hardly the no-brainer choice for Q-Tip — himself a Zelig-like figure who turns up all over the pop culture grid and has never been confined by a narrow view of what hip-hop is and isn’t supposed to be — although it remains to be heard how the two’s musical sensibilities will mesh.

“He’s a big fan of rap,” Q-Tip said of the producer. “It’ll be cool working with him. We’re going to make a film out of the project too.”

NEWS: Amplive Ceased And Desisted

Pitchfork reports that DJ Amplive was served with a cease-and-desist over his Radiohead/In Rainbows remix project Rainydayz Remixes, which I posted about last month. It wasn't Thom Yorke and co. that shut Amplive down, but their publisher Warner/Chappell. "On December 18, Amplive received a missive from Warner/Chappell informing him that he had "created musical arrangements / remixes" without proper "approval" and must cease distribution of them at once. Rather than tangle with these suits and their armies of lawyers, Amplive has agreed to suspend the project for the time being." Watch the video below for Amplive's point of view.

DOWNLOAD Radiohead - Wierd Fishs (DJ Amplive Remix) (MP3)

The Bar Area's DJ Amplive is slated to release his Radiohead remix project, Rainydayz Remixes, January 10th. It will feature verses from Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Too Short, Zion, and others. The digital-only collection will be available as a zip file including 320kbps MP3s, and hi-res artwork, but only if you can proof you've purchased the original Radiohead album. Interesting model.

Update: Just to clarify, to get the album on Jan 10th, you must send a W.A.S.T.E. email to amplive@onesevensevensix.com, and the zip file will be delivered on release date.

LISTEN: Floor Plan - Lemon

DOWNLOAD Floor Plan - Lemon (MP3)

Remember when Lupe Fiasco, Pharrell and Kanye West, as Child Rebel Soldier, sampled a song by Radiohead's Thom Yorke? Well this one is kind of like someone Lupe-esque rapping over Sigur Ros. Good stuff.

The Day I Overate

Who would've ever thought watching these guys that they'd become the greatest band in rock music today with one of the greatest rock singers ever?

Somehow it's very reminiscent of Lord of the Rings'Schmiegel.
